Total Fluorine (TF) Testing of Chemical Formulations
As many brands look to phase out the use of PFAS chemistries within their supply chain, this is invariably placing pressures on upstream chemical suppliers to demonstrate the absence of such chemistry in their formulations for leather, textile and synthetic production. In many cases, this visibility of compliance may be in addition to existing certifications held by the upstream supplier.
Eurofins | Chem-MAP are now able to offer Total Fluorine testing in accordance with the recognised standards EN14582:2016 or ASTM D7359:2018, which can be used to screen for the presence of PFAS in chemical formulations.
Why Test?
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of many thousands of possible substances used to enhance the performance of products such as textiles, footwear and apparel.
The use of PFAS chemistry is being widely scrutinised due to their bio-accumulative properties and associated hazardous impacts, with many compounds showing high toxicity and some considered substances of very serious concern according to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). With specific respect to the bio-accumulative nature of PFAS chemistry, the so-called “forever chemicals”, there is increasing global concern around contamination levels and, consequently, imposing widespread restrictions.

The rising demand for sustainable and responsible production is driving manufacturers across industries to re-evaluate their approach to chemical management. Whether in leather, textiles, footwear, or other materials, companies are increasingly required to ensure that the chemicals used in their processes comply with global safety and environmental standards.
