There is a growing interest within brands and retailers to respond to questions relating to vegan products. Whilst it is easy to determine if the main materials used in a product are vegan (ie not of animal origin), it is difficult to be certain that the chemical formulations used in the manufacture of the products are not from an animal source.
Some raw materials used in the manufacturing of certain classes of chemical formulations may contain raw materials of animal origin (adhesives and detergents) as examples.
Testing to provide certainty around the origin of chemical formulations is challenging as there are very few typical chemical markers for an animal-based product. DNA, for example will be present in plant and animal products (including human contamination from manufacturing processes)
Chem-MAP’s Vegan Verification and Certification programme offers a range of unique services to determine whether there is a risk of animal-derived chemical formulations used in the manufacturing of vegan-based materials.
