Eurofins | Chem-MAP are pleased to confirm that Mylo™ material has been verified as a vegan material after successful completion of the Eurofins vegan verification programme, which includes the analysis of all inputs for the presence of animal DNA. Mylo is one of the first vegan novel materials to receive this verification.
The Vegan Verification testing programme is a robust process that gives the Apparel and Footwear industry the assurance that products sold and marketed as vegan do not contain any animal derivatives. The Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) DNA analysis is comprehensive as it has the potential to pick up all fish, mammal, bird, insect, crustacean, and mollusc species in a single test. This testing regime, coupled with a detailed document review and risk assessment of the manufacturing process makes the Eurofins | Chem-MAP protocol one of the most thorough vegan verification programmes currently available in today’s marketplace.
Mylo™ is an animal-free material created by material innovations company Bolt Threads that looks and feels like animal leather and is currently being used by the world’s top brands including adidas, Stella McCartney, lululemon and Kering. Made from mycelium — the underground root structure of mushrooms — Mylo is certified bio-based and developed using a highly efficient process that is intentionally designed for low environmental impact. For example, the mycelium used to make Mylo is grown in less than two weeks using vertical agriculture techniques in a facility fuelled by 100% renewable energy.
“A planet with 10 billion people cannot live in the same way that a planet with 1 billion people did, and in our resource-constrained world, now is the time for meaningful innovation to develop low impact alternatives to the materials people know and love,” said Libby Sommer, Director of Sustainability at Bolt Threads. “We are proud to receive this thorough vegan certification from such an acclaimed source and view it as a testament to our rigorous production process which was designed with both people and planetary health in mind.”
‘The Chem-MAP team are proud to award the Vegan Verification mark to Mylo™ in recognition of this vegan material innovation. Bolt Threads’ world-class scientists and engineers are demonstrating that it is possible to develop high-quality, vegan materials made using Green Chemistry and no animal DNA, states Georgina Mawer, Head of Eurofins | Chem-MAP – Vegan Verification programme.
