Achieve ZDHC MRSL V3.1 Conformance Level 1, 2, 3 through the Eurofins | Chem-MAP for Chemical Manufacturers Programme

Chemical companies around the world will benefit from becoming Chem-MAP certified, a programme which enables chemical manufacturers to gain ZDHC MRSL V3.1 Conformance Level 1, 2, 3, providing verification of chemical formulations to the ZDHC MRSL. Thereby, demonstrating their commitment to responsible upstream chemical management.

Benefits of becoming a Chem-MAP Approved Partner.

  • ZDHC  MRSL V3.1 conformance to  Level  1, 2  & 3
  • ZDHC compliant chemical formulations listed on the ZDHC Gateway, updated to show certification of ZDHC Conformance  Level 1 – 3
  • Assurance of chemical supply chain transparency through on-site audits and MRSL testing (ZDHC conformance Level 2 & 3 only)
  • Recognition of the chemical company’s commitment to responsible chemistry

Becoming a ZDHC Certified Chemical Manufacturer

The journey to ZDHC conformance begins with the chemical manufacturer uploading their product portfolio onto the ZDHC Gateway. This process is effectively the chemical company’s commitment that their Gateway listed products are conformant to the limits specified in the ZDHC MRSL V3.1.

In order to achieve ZDHC conformance, chemical manufacturers are required to engage with a ZDHC Approved MRSL Certifier, such as Chem-MAP.

The Chem-MAP  programme for chemical manufacturers enables chemical companies to become ZDHC certified, to Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.

How to become certified through the Eurofins | Chem-MAP programme.

Chemical companies who engage in the Chem-MAP programme, with the aim of achieving ZDHC conformance for their products, are required to undertake the appropriate chemical management module(s) to achieve their desired level of conformance:

To achieve ZDHC Conformance Level 1, your business will need to complete:

  • Module 1: MRSL Testing and SDS review

To achieve ZDHC Conformance Level 2, your business will need to complete:

  • Module 1: MRSL Testing and SDS review
  • Module 2: On-site Chemical Management Audit (Product Stewardship and Document Review, Onsite Assessment of Management Systems)

To achieve ZDHC Conformance Level 3, your business will need to complete:

  • Module 1: MRSL Testing and SDS Review
  • Module 2: On-site Chemical Management Audit (Product Stewardship and Document Review, Onsite Assessment of Management Systems, Assessment of Chemical Hazard Assessment Capability)
  • Module 3: Chemical Supply Chain Transparency (inc. raw materials analysis)

Eurofins | Chem-MAP for Chemical Manufacturers – Programme Modules

The Chem-MAP programme for chemical manufacturers, evaluates a chemical supplier’s readiness to supply MRSL compliant chemicals to their customers. The assessment involves both the testing of chemical formulations and site audits, which also evaluate the management of suppliers.

Module 1: MRSL Testing

Mandatory for all ZDHC Conformance Levels  (1 – 3)

In order to achieve a higher level of ZDHC conformance, an intelligent product selection of a company’s uploaded ZDHC Gateway listed product portfolio will need to be tested against the ZDHC MRSL. The MRSL testing module is divided into two parts:

Complete MRSL Testing of Chemical Formulations

A proportion (5%*) of the listed ZDHC Gateway chemical formulations will undergo testing against ALL of the chemicals listed in the ZDHC MRSL V2.0 (over 140 individual chemical tests)

Smart Testing of Chemical Formulations

A proportion (10%*) of the ZDHC Gateway listed chemicals will undergo ‘Smart Testing’ against the ZDHC MRSL chemical groups according to risk matrices. ‘Smart Testing’ uses testing principles that are based upon the guidelines published by ZDHC (Annex A – Quality Control Guidance for Analytical Test Data Supporting ZDHC MRSL Conformance).

* Please note that percentages are based upon the percentages of products intended to be uploaded onto the ZDHC Gateway. These numbers are subject to change, depending on the minimum number of products uploaded and level of risk assigned. For companies seeking Level 1 conformance only, all formulations within the product portfolio will be expected to undertake smart testing in accordance with MRSL V3.1.

The Eurofins | Chem-MAP MRSL testing module relies on the chemical testing of multiple batches of the same chemical products, to investigate the consistence of the chemical product supplied. The formulations are required to pass the Chem-MAP MRSL testing requirements, in order to achieve ZDHC  conformance Level 1.

In order to extend the ZDHC conformance achievement to Level 2 or 3, Chem-MAP Modules 2 and 3 are also required.

All MRSL testing is carried out within the Chem-MAP approved Eurofins testing laboratories.

Module 2: Chemical Management Audit

Mandatory for ZDHC Conformance Level 2 and 3

The Chem-MAP Chemical Management Audit module involves an onsite audit of a chemical manufacturing facility (multiple site audits are also available).

Within the Chem-MAP Chemical Management Audit, the product stewardship practices of the chemical supplier are evaluated. There are seven critical areas covered within the audit protocol, these include:

  • Management Controls
  • Regulations and Permits
  • Chemical Selection and Assessment
  • Chemical Storage
  • Chemical Use
  • Chemical Disposal
  • Chemical Distribution

Module 3: Chemical Supply Chain Transparency

Mandatory for ZDHC Conformance Level 3

The Chem-MAP Supply Chain Transparency module is a verification process used to evaluate the supply chain of the chemical manufacturer, focusing on supplier and subcontractor management processes.

The Chem-MAP Module 3 can be subdivided into two parts:

On-site Assessment:

  • Used to assess the chemical manufacturers supply chain, this includes subcontracted activities which are likely to incur additional chemical risk
  • The Module 3 assessment is carried out alongside the Chem-MAP
    Chemical Management Audit (Module 2)

Testing of Raw Materials:

  • A percentage of the raw materials (used in the formulation of commercial chemical products) are subjected to the Eurofins | BLC Due Diligence Testing Standard (MRSL testing).

Eurofins | Chem-MAP for Multiple Chemical Sites

Chem-MAP can be extended within the applicant company to include additional chemical production sites. Assessment of multiple sites is viewed positively, as it further supports improved management of chemical risk. Chem-MAP assessments for multiple sites are further recognised in the overall awards system.

Eurofins | Chem-MAP Awards

  • Credits are awarded for each of the three Chem-MAP modules, Modules 1, 2 and 3
  • Upon completion of the full Chem-MAP for Chemical Manufacturers
Programme credits are combined to provide an overall Grade for the facility:
Site Award Credits
Grade A 290 credits*
Grade B 213 credits*
Grade C 146 credits*
Grade D ≤ 145 credits*

* Minimum requirement

In the case of multi-site audits of chemical manufacturing facilities, additional company awards are obtainable:

Eurofins | Chem-MAP Multi-site Award

On the completion of two or more chemical management audits, chemical manufacturers are eligible to achieve Chem-MAP Multi-site Award status, dependent on the grades awarded for individual site audits:

Company Awards (Multiple Sites) Grades
Leader Achievement of “Grade A” at the main production site and at least “Grade B” for all other major production sites
Advanced Achievement of “Grade B” at the main production site and at least “Grade C” for all other major production sites
Progressive Achievement of “Grade C” at the main production site and at least “Grade D” for all other major production sites
Engaged For manufacturers engaged in the Chem-MAP process

Recertification

Eurofins | Chem-MAP for Chemical Manufacturer’s recertification will be required after 2 years.
