Preventing Common RSL Failures in Manufacturing with Chem-MAP®

Published 23rd April 2019

RSL failures can be a significant financial and reputational issue for manufacturers when testing for compliance with international chemical regulations such as REACH, CPSIA and China GB Standards, for example.

Our analytical laboratory at Eurofins | BLC has observed that some of the most common RSL failures experienced by manufacturers of leather, textile and synthetic products include:

  • Heavy metals
  • Phthalates
  • Chromium VI
  • APEOs
  • Formaldehyde

However, RSL failures in manufacturing can be minimised through the implementation of a robust chemical management system such as Chem-MAP®, which supports ZDHC objectives.

How can Chem-MAP® prevent RSL failures for manufacturers?

Chem-MAP® is suite of chemical verification systems for the entire supply chain, meaning that it is designed to work in a synchronised way with tailored chemical management programmes and verification testing to suit the needs of all businesses. The manufacturers of materials and products programme has been designed specifically for manufacturers, with the main objective of implementing a robust chemical management system within the manufacturing facility, therefore lessening the risk of RSL failures further downstream in the supply chain.

Manufacturers who undertake the programme will undergo a rigorous chemical management audit of their facility, covering a variety of areas including but not limited to chemical purchasing and verification of input chemistry, chemical inventory log (CIL), MRSL and RSL, testing and futureproofing. Our experts will highlight any areas for improvement and online training is essential for all technical staff who are directly involved with the handling and management of chemicals.

Completing the manufacturers of materials and products programme gives manufacturers the opportunity to achieve the Chem-MAP® Approved Manufacturer (CAM) award, and technical staff to achieve the Chem-MAP® Approved Technicians (CATs) award. Both awards signify total commitment to responsible chemical management by manufacturers.
