Chemical Management System: Defining the Buzzword

Published 13th February 2019

Compliance with restricted chemical requirements is now an essential part of material manufacturing and product supply. Achieving a stable and conforming product requires responsible chemical management at all stages. In addition, value chains are increasingly concerned about the upstream chemical inputs into materials, and how they impact people and the environment.

As such, businesses are now investigating the requirements and value proposition of an effective chemical management system (CMS).  But what exactly does that mean?

Defining a Chemical Management System

The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) group defines a Chemical Management System as “an effective framework for improving overall environmental and chemical performance while achieving the goal of zero discharge”.

Why do I Need a Chemical Management System?

A robust, effective Chemical Management System would be multi-faceted; beyond the assessment of restricted chemicals in finished materials, a CMS would seek to control and monitor a broader spectrum of potential risk. An enhanced CMS would evaluate and define processes to minimise risk from multiple angles; including considerations of the following:

–    Supplier Onboarding

–    Material Procurement

–    Chemical Inventory Logs

–    Policy Creation & Maintenance

–    Testing (RSL and MRSL)

–    Training

The primary notion that underpins a CMS is that it should serve as a programme for progressive improvement. Through the understanding of a multitude of relevant ‘risk factors,’ your business will be able to gain a more comprehensive and reliable picture of its individual chemical risk.  Through management and data analysis, these risks will be better understood and consequently more effectively minimised.
